When doing an MRI of the bone, which is one of the assessments for Gaucher Disease modalities, the pediatrician can see the fat infiltration of the bone marrow - bearing in mind that Gaucher Disease is caused by an enzyme that works in the macrophage, and macrophages reside in the bone marrow so when the macrophage become filled with that single lipid it accumulates in the bone marrow and you see changes in the signal intensity of the bone marrow. When the bone marrow becomes so enlarged with these infiltration, the blood supply can become critical and the bone can infarc and can scleros. Because of the osteopenia and osteoporosis you can also have collapsed vertebrae, which will cause a lot of pain and discomfort.
